What is Bioinformatics??

Bioinformatics is an umbrella term that consists of study of computer science, mathematics, statistics and biology.Old methods of research on biological activities was time consuming, as many scientists do the wet lab experiments.Wet lab experiments were time consuming, expensive and tiresome. Some times after doing work for 5-6 yrs they still fail in their experimentation. With the advent of revolutionized field (Bioinformatics) it is now possible to do experiments by using software tools to find out defects in living organisms DNA that cause mutations and genetic diseases.Bioinformatics entails the usage of biological algorithms, biological databases ,software tools ,statistical and mathematical methods to solve problems related to biological data.
History and origin of Bioinformatics started in the 1979-1980,s when 579 human genes were mapped. The term was coined by Paulien Hogeweg in 1979. To store the genetic information bioinformatics databases were created such as GenBank, EMBL,DDBJ. By using this data from these data bases bioinformaticians do the following activities...
  • Rational Drug design
  • Protein protein interactions
  • Preclinical and clinical trials
  • Protein ligand docking
  • Multiple sequence alignment
  • phlogenetic predictions
Bioinformatics is a vast field consisting of many fields. Some of the major fields of bioinformatics are !
  • Structural Bioinformatics
  • Computational Biology
  • Drug Designing
  • Phylogenetics
  • Gene structure prediction
  • Genomics
  • Proteomics
  • RNA structure prediction
  • Software Development
  • Forensic Sciences
  • Comparative genomics
  • Chemoinformatics
